The Bakery Basket Series

My All Time, Top 5 Bakeries in NYC (that focus on Western-European-American style breads) (aka we aren’t talking about a good old fashioned Canto coffee shop and bakery) (updated as of mid-2025)

Only number 1 is ranked. The rest are in a random order.

#1: Supermoon Bakehouse

This page could have just been my love letter to Supermoon. I’ve been coming here since I moved to the city in 2017; It’s my most frequented bakery and I’ve seen it go through all its different skins through the years. Every baked good I’ve had is amazing, and I’ve had a lot. There was one time I got basically one of everything they had and brought a box to a bachelorette party.

Then, one day in 2024, they decided to do GELATO. They officially now also make my favorite gelato in the city. I haven’t had a single bad flavor, but I constantly go back for the Ube Pandan Ice Cream Sandwich, and I had a friend dying over their Caramel Banana Miso Gelato.

My favorite cruffin flavor was when they had a Matcha Raspberry Lychee filling, and they always have their Ferrero Rocher flavor around. That’s incredible. There’s a constant slew of new bakeries opening up in NYC, and so many of them are great, but Supermoon has and always will remain #1 in my heart.

Hani’s Bakery

A relatively new one that opened up in 2024, and so far, everything I’ve had has been phenomenal, so it’s risen right up the rankings to one of my favorite bakeries. Their highlight is definitely the cinnamon roll, and it is my favorite classic cinnamon roll in the city. Something about the glaze is perfect, and the dough is the right balance of bready and gooey.

They also started going soft serve after 5:30PM as of mid-2025! I’ve only had the blueberry pie and strawberry and pretzel flavor, but both are great and the perfect summer treat.

Tall Poppy

Tall Poppy is insane. They have my favorite classic plain croissant in the city, and it is the closest to a “Paris Croissant” I’ve ever had outside of Paris (and I ate a lot of croissants in France).

There’s something about the butter they use and the amount they use that’s perfect. They swap their menu favors monthly like supermoon, rotating through seasonal flavors. The last time I went, they had an amazing eggs benedict croissant that had a perfectly cooked egg.

The surprise favorite for me was the tiramisu filled croissant though. It was their perfect butter croissant filled with the best refreshing espresso chocolatey filling. Basically, any croissant item you get at Tall Poppy will be amazing

Francesco Soho

This place was a huge surprise. I was randomly walking by and decided to stop because I was hungry and the pain suisse I had absolutely knocked my socks off. THe flavor was amaro cherry, and the pastry was perfectly crispy and LIGHT. Somehow the butter was just right to make it flaky, crispy, and light.

They had a basil, peach, apricot croissant “sphere” that was super cute too and the cream was delicate, with all 3 of those flavors shining though and somehow all working so well together.

Birdee

Also a surprise. I stopped by when I was in Williamsburg in the morning. Similar to Francesco, the pastry on the pain suisse-like pecan croissants was so light, but flaky and crispy.

However, the pastry that shot this bakery up in the ranks for me was the Hokaido Milk Bun with a Pistacho Cherry cream filling. That was one of the best buns I’ve ever had, with a perfectly fluffy bread and a delicate, delicious filling.
